Prescriptions

A prescription for medication may be issued following a consultation with a doctor.

A form will be issued detailing what is to be taken and when.

The prescription form can be taken to a chemist for the medication to be dispensed, or surgery dispensary if you qualify for this service, please check with surgery by phone or on your next visit.

A repeat prescription may be issued up to the recommended review date. After which point a medication review may be necessary.

How to request a repeat prescription

Repeat prescriptions can either be requested:

All repeat prescription requests that arrive on the surgery premises before 10.00am will be available within 24 hours Monday to Friday.

Note that for requests received on a Saturday, collection day will be the following Monday after 2.00pm.

You will be given a computerised repeat prescription request slip (counterfoil) which allows you to tick the items you require when ordering. If you do not have a counterfoil for re-ordering purposes, please put your repeat prescription request in writing.

No repeat prescription requests will be taken over the telephone for medico-legal reasons.

Medication Reviews

We have a medico-legal duty to ensure that we review medication regularly, although some medication should be reviewed quite often others are only necessary annually. If you feel that you do not need a face to face consultation please make a telephone appointment.

The purpose of the review is to determine:

  1. whether the medication is still required
  2. whether the medication is still effective
  3. whether there are any side effects
  4. whether there are any tests or examinations required whilst on the medication.

If you have recently seen a consultant or specialist at hospital it may not be obligatory to re-attend the surgery for a review. If you are unsure please enquire with the dispensary staff.
