Prescriptions

A prescription for medication may be issued following a consultation with a doctor.

A form will be issued detailing what is to be taken and when.

The prescription form can be taken to a chemist for the medication to be dispensed, or to our surgery dispensary if you qualify for this service.

Our on-site dispensary is able to dispense medications to patients who registered for this service and who live more than one mile from the chemist on the High Street, Thrapston. It is also available to all patients when the chemist is closed. We can also dispense medications to registered disabled patients wherever they live.

A repeat prescription may be issued up to the recommended review date, after which point a medication review may be necessary.

How to Request a Repeat Prescription

Repeat prescriptions can either be requested:

All repeat prescription requests that arrive at the surgery before 10.00am will normally be available for collection from 2.00pm the same day.

Requests received after 10.00am can normally be collected after 2.00pm on the following weekday.

You will be given a computerised repeat prescription request slip (counterfoil) which allows you to tick the items you require when ordering next time. If you do not have a counterfoil for re-ordering purposes, please put your repeat prescription request in writing.

We regret that telephone requests for repeat prescriptions cannot be accepted under any circumstances.

Medication Reviews

We, as Doctors, have a responsibility for the prescriptions we write. It is essential therefore that we review medication regularly.

Although some medication should be reviewed quite often, others are only necessary annually. In many cases the review can be carried out by our practice nurse.

If you feel that you do not need a face to face consultation please make a telephone appointment.

The purpose of the review is to determine whether:

  1. the medication is still required.
  2. the medication is still effective.
  3. there are any side effects.
  4. there are any tests or examinations required whilst on the medication.

If you have recently seen a consultant or specialist at hospital it may not be necessary to re-attend the surgery for a review. If this is the case please discuss this with a member of our dispensary staff.
